The unofficial end of summer is coming up and depending on the type of person you are you’ll either be lucking forward to the upcoming ski and snowboard season or grasping at the last straws of warm weather activities like mountain biking and hiking. If you’re like us, you look forward to the snow flying. The problem is we’re still at least two months away from shredding so what should you do? Check out a ski & snowboard festival! Here are just a few of the bigger ones happening across the US to get your blood pumping.
Just a few years ago the only way to see the new shred flick was to go to a movie premiere but in the last few years the dawning of festivals have grown massively. Instead of just one film you get a chance to see multiple films, a rail jam, hear awesome music, and so much more!
Ski & Snowboard Festivals 2017
Big Bear, California
September 23rd 2017
This is THE original music and snowboard festival. In fact, it’s the largest winter kick-off party known to man with over 5,000 people showing up to watch pros go after it. In its 14th year the park crew at Bear Mountain continues to push the limits of what a summer time rail jam course can be like. Let’s just say it isn’t like any other course out there. Of course, a snowboard session can’t go down without some tunes. With music performances by Method Man, Red Man, Andrew W.K., and Tomorrows Bad Seeds you KNOW the event will be rockin’.

Is there anything better than 1st chair on a powder day? We think not. With the perfect moniker this nationally recognized festival is your chance to get pumped especially if you’re a skier. With a 3-story street-style pro jam with your favorite pro skiers on real snow, a giant gear sale, live music performances from national touring acts and much more this is a must for all folks who are passionate about skiing. Need more incentive? The award winning indie-rock band Air Traffic Controller will be headlining this year’s show!

In its 5th year get in the mood for snow and watch as the pros dust off their boards and go for it at the Vans “off the Wall” Van Doren Pro Jam. Don’t be fooled, even though it’s the first jam of the season these competitors won’t be holding back. To ratchet up the event there will also be a full lineup of musicians to keep the party rockin’ the entire festival. With past year’s acts including such memorable artists like Suicidal Tendencies, Talib Kweli, and Kadavar the music will cover the full spectrum and offer something for all.
October 20th – 21st 2017
Last year was Snowvana’s first edition and it’s exciting to hear that it’s back and bigger than ever! Being the ultimate celebration of snow sports for the Pacific Northwest it includes a multitude of exciting activities. For example, the Mt Hood Film Festival will include ski & snowboard films from production companies like Teton Gravity Research. Into Beer? Well, Snowvana is doubling the size of their brew fest by including over two dozen different local breweries. The Pacific Northwest has also been a hotbed of music so it makes sense that Snowvana is going to showcase regional bands to kick off the season.
Salt Lake City, Utah
November 4th 2017
Back in 2010 the original Shred Fest started as a way for the ski & snowboard community to join together and have a pray for snow party in Missoula, Montana. Over the years this event continued to grow and evolve and the founder, James Fleege, wanted to push the limits and see if it could happen in a bigger city. That’s when in 2016 Shred Fest did its inaugural show in Salt Lake City and was a HUGE success. Over 3000 people showed up to kick off the season. For 2017, for only $10 if purchased in advance gets you access to see awesome music, a sick rail jam, and of course the latest in films. If that wasn’t enough there will also be a pro meet & greet including such fabled names as: Tanner Hall, Pat Moore, Ted Borland, and Sammy Carlson.
So, if you got the winter-time itch and need to scratch it check out one of these amazing shows. Not in one of these towns or can’t front a plane ticket don’t worry as usual we’ll keep you posted on all the movie premieres happening across North America.
