After the Spring Equinox, it’s only a matter of time. It’s the time of year when many begin the transition. As resorts across North America wrap up their season, skis and snowboards are put on the rack and exchanged for paddleboards and mountain bikes…but I say, “Not so fast!” It isn’t over until the fat lady sings as they say. There are still some chairs turning. To find out which resorts are still open check out On the Snow. They’ve put together a solid list that is updated routinely.
We’ve covered why we think spring is so great in many of our prior posts, but if you’re still not sold here’s another reason…closing day events! This is one of my favorite times of year. If you are into events, festivities and après you will dig it too!
Each resort puts their own spin on it. There are concerts, costumes and much more. One tradition that’s always a hit is pond skimming! This is when a bunch of crazy riders and skiers attempt to ride down a hill and cross a pool of water. Sounds easy right? Well, it is definitely not! If you’ve ever ridden in spring and hit a slushy puddle you understand a pond skim is harder than it looks!
Once it was just entertainment and a way that snow enthusiasts welcomed spring. Pond skimming has finally hit the big time! On May 23, 2016 Powder Magazine is putting on the first annual Pond Skimming World Cup in Sunshine Village, Banff, Alberta, Canada! This event will crown the King and Queen Pond Skimming Champions of the World! Three of the four qualifying events are in the books and the final qualifier goes off at the legendary Squaw Valley Ski Resort on April 30th!

Where: Squaw Valley Ski Resort, Olympic Valley, CA
Registration: 9 a.m. at KT Base Bar
