The Raw & Honest Truth Of A Regular Gal Taking On The Great Outdoors
Just me being me. Good. Bad. Definitely ugly. But at least I’m outside! I’m Jaime, usually known as the “other half of Local Freshies®”… but not anymore. I’m leaping out of my comfort zone & moving in front of the camera to share what it’s really like taking on the great outdoors.
Gear reviews. How-To’s. Behind-The-Scenes. Daily shenanigans.
It’s not polished. There’s no filters. Sometimes things go amazing. Other times, I definitely want to hit rewind. But that’s reality. You should NEVER feel embarrassed to try new things. Anyone who trolls you is too afraid to try themselves. You can feel sorry for them. Just give it a go! I do it all the time and yes… it doesn’t always work out & I probably look ridiculous, but who cares. I’d rather be outside making memories than couch surfing.

This winter may have started a bit slow, but as soon as the #snow started flying, it was time to start making reps on the mountain. Winter doesn’t get any longer because it started late so just like I work to be in running shape, I also have to work at being in #snowboarding shape. This year is a first for me in that my first 5 days of the slopes have been squeezed into three weeks and across three resorts. I’ve never ridden all three of our local spots at the start of the season. Maybe that’s a good omen? 😊

What a year! My first season #trailrunning and running a 50K #ultra. Not coming for a running background, it was a challenge and slow progression from March till the race in October. But I got to the Start and Finish lines… and it was amazing! When I started running, I didn’t set a year end goal for miles or vert, but as December started closing in, I noticed how close to 1,000 miles I was getting and decided to make one final goal for the season and hit that before 2026 rang in. Our very slow start to winter definitely helped me achieve this without lots of cold, soggy miles. And for that I am so grateful! But now I’m ready to move indoors as needed to keep the miles coming and ramp back up for my next race in April. With starting 2026 running from January onward, I wonder what numbers I’ll hit next year?
P.S. - People like to decorate trees in the woods here in Tahoe. It’s so fun to find them along the trail as you’re running through the forest. Some of them are pretty deep in there too which really shows passion for holiday cheer 🎄 with having to pack in all those ornaments for miles! I found 4 trees within my little radius but I’m sure there are so many more to find. That might have to be a gaol next year before the snow arrives - see how many decorated trees I can find on the trails. The number to beat is 4… so I should be able to do that.

I’m still on the hunt to my #1000 miles of trails for 2025. And now I’m cutting it close if I don’t want to start getting wet. 12 miles left and two days of not-wet weather to log them outside. It has been a very strange, warm, soggy, fog-filled December in Tahoe and today was no different. My run started in the 20’s and didn’t warm up at all. The fog was so thick at times that when I got home, my head was wet from all the mist. It wasn’t the most enjoyable run, but it got me 6 miles closer to my goal. I sit at 994.2 miles… so close! Tomorrow is the day. Regardless of the weather, it will be glorious!

After a year of #trailrunning, I still get in my head that running a downhill route will be easier than slogging uphill. That is never the result. And I know this but somehow I dismiss it in the moment. I officially think running downhill is so much harder on my legs and psyche than just putting my head down and cranking up in elevation. Note to self… “Please Jaime, remember that downhill is worse. Much worse. The next time you want to log miles and just get them done, don’t pick downhill. Just don’t do it. Your lungs can take a beating much easier than your legs.” The best option is a nice rolling route. A little uphill. A little downhill. All perfectly spaced out to give your legs a rest when they need it. The only problem is… I don’t know where that perfect route is. 🤣 It clearly only exists in my head. Here’s to doing hard things.

I can’t believe it’s already December. I didn’t have a year end mileage goal when I started trail running in March, but now that 2025 is coming to a close, I am so close to logging 1,000 miles that I’m going for it and want to hit that total by the time New Year’s comes around. Luckily (and unlucky at the same time), winter has been really slow to start out West for us so the trails are easy to run on without having to combat snow and cold temps. So here’s to another Saturday to rack up a few more on my quest to the big #1000.
