Similar to your pair of skis or a snowboard, ski jackets aren’t one size fits all. The features you want for a backcountry ski jacket is VERY different than what you want for in-bounds. If you have the finances for a quiver of jackets, it might be the best solution, but for those of us out there that are searching for a jacket for all conditions the Black Diamond Recon Stretch Jacket is one that you should highly consider. Read about why we think of it as a jacket of all trades.

Verdict

While the Black Diamond Recon Stretch is marketed as a backcountry ski jacket, we see it as a rare hybrid that works just as well for backcountry missions as it does for resort laps. The athletic, form fitting design still allows incredible freedom of movement, something we rarely feel in most hardshells. It also packs in thoughtful features like extended face coverage, easy-to-adjust cuffs, and plenty of pockets that make it highly functional on the mountain. It may not be a pure backcountry or resort specific jacket, but if you want one tough, versatile shell that can handle both, the Recon Stretch is a solid all-around choice.

For a lighter version that leans more towards backcountry with its lighter, minimal design but still holds its own on the resort slopes, the Black Diamond LT Stretch is one to consider too.

Where the Recon Stretch Shines

Over the last 30 plus years, I’ve worn a ton of ski jackets, but the Black Diamond Recon Stretch? It’s a bit of an enigma and in the best way.

At first it feels heavy when you hold it, but once you wear it, that heaviness disappears. It fits snug right out of the gate but when you’re actually ripping down the mountain, you barely notice it as it moves with you not against you. And here’s the kicker: when temps dropped to a chilly 8 degrees, I threw on a puffy underneath and this jacket still gave me plenty of room without feeling tight or cramped. I was honestly surprised how much freedom I had.

The secret? That BD.dry™ 3L four way stretch nylon fabric plus some smart patterning that’s basically wizardry for movement.

I’m usually skeptical about proprietary membranes as GoreTex is the gold standard for a reason, but this jacket held up like a champ in classic wet Sierra storms and even during an unseasonably cold Grand Teton blast. It took it all without flinching.

Storm-Ready: Black Diamond’s Game-Changing Face Coverage

This jacket is packed with features, some of which are seriously unique compared to anything else on the market. The taller face covering and how it connects with the hood is one of those standout details.

Jaime wasn’t a fan as she only likes her buff to do all the face work, but I’m a huge fan. Normally, I wear a gaiter but leave my nose and cheeks uncovered, which often leaves me cold during storms. Black Diamond’s design totally changed that. On stormy lift rides, I just tuck my head in like a turtle, and when it’s time to ski, I pop my head out feeling fully protected.

The adjustable cuffs may be small but they’re super easy to use even with mittens on. The Velcro sticks like Spider-Man webs holding strong even in snowstorms. The zippers are also small but work smoothly and are easy to operate.

Finally, when it comes to storage, this jacket doesn’t disappoint. Inside you will find two stash pockets perfect for your skins on the way down. Outside there is a chest pocket, two hand pockets, and even a dedicated lift ticket pocket on the arm.

Sizing

At 6’3” and 190 lbs., I usually go for a large or extra-large jacket. The Black Diamond Recon Stretch has what I like to call a “European fit,” similar to a regular pair of jeans. If you’re usually between sizes, I’d recommend sizing up if you don’t like a snug fit. I know I’m tall, and personally it feels a bit short in the back, but most people will likely find the length just right.

Balancing Features and Weight: Requires Sacrifice

When it comes to backcountry ski jackets, there’s a fine line between bomb proof, features, and weight. At 1 lb. 11 oz., the Recon Stretch is heavier than you’d want but that’s because of its extra features and rugged materials. It’s also why it isn’t as packable as a pure backcountry ski jacket. If you’re thinking of spending more time in the backcountry and only an occasional day in-bounds, the LT Recon Stretch might be a better option for you.

On the other hand, as a pure resort jacket, it lacks insulated pockets so in strong winds (40+ mph), you can feel the breeze a bit more than I would like because of the 20,000 g/m breathability rating.

But here’s the thing, this jacket isn’t trying to be just a backcountry shell or just a resort jacket. It’s a hybrid. It offers solid protection against the elements, plenty of pockets for resort days, and enough breathability for skinning uphill.

If you’re the type who rarely takes off your shell when touring or wants a resort jacket tougher than most plus priced right, this is an excellent all-around choice.
