The local café is the beating pulse of a mountain town…an extension of culture in these communities. Even more fitting, coffee itself is grown in the mountains. So, no matter what time of year there’s no better way to start your day than a ‘Cup of Joe’ and a splash of local culture. Yep, we said local. Now every mountain town comes equipped with a Starbucks or another chain, but there is something special about the little guy. Whether it’s the extra care, their own recipe or it’s all in our heads…there is a difference. If you are like us and want something local, give these spots a try.

The perfect cup.

What makes Montana Coffee Traders different than any other place you’ve been to? For starters, their impressive array of single-origin coffees and tried and true blends along with best tasting flavored coffees in the world.  Once you purchase a bag of Flathead cherry coffee and open it, the aroma of freshly baked biscotti will hit your senses. For those coffee purists out there don’t worry the additional flavor will not overpower the actual coffee itself. Even if flavored coffee isn’t your thing, try it at least once. Alpen Sierra Coffee – Tahoe’s premier coffee

Dark roast finishing.

Instead of the hum drum black coffee or your average name brand why not try something locally roasted in Lake Tahoe? Alpen Sierra is your answer. Founder and roaster, Christian Waskiewicz, spent a lot of time in the Alps and the complexity found each cup of coffee show that it was time well spent. Alpen’s focus on using the best quality beans along with understanding the science behind roasting the perfect blend of coffee has lead them to receive many accolades from such respected critics like the Coffee Review. You can pick up a bag of coffee beans or tea from the roasting plant if you are in the Carson Valley. They also have many retailer locations around the Lake such as Alpina Café or Blue Angel Café. Cowboy Coffee

The town of Jackson Hole is almost totally surrounded by national parks and is arguably the most scenic place in North America. With the massive Grand Tetons standing head and shoulders above everything else in the area you better have a cup of coffee that can get your ready for such an adventuresome place. Cowboy Coffee fits that bill. It may not be the largest roaster in town but it is definitely our favorite when we head into town. Their cowboy original blend is perfect for a crisp winter’s morning or a warm summer’s sunrise as you head out for a beautiful day into the wilderness.

A great coffee shop isn’t just about the coffee. A lot of times it’s about the culture, the community, and the atmosphere. Moguls is the best example of this. Located literally steps from the base of the Whistler gondola this coffee shop is a great place to people watch, discuss the snow pack, or talk about that ridiculous air you did in the mountain bike park. In addition to the vibe this place also serves fantastic pastries, epic coffee, and awesome wraps. If you are looking for something affordable in Whistler and has a great environment then this is your place.
