Nevada City, California… that is. The Nevada City Classic is one of the premiere sporting events in the Sierra foothills. It’s the largest and oldest bike race on the West Coast and the second oldest continuous bike race in the US. For the 3rd time in its 60 year history, it will be moved off of Father’s Day and into September. If you’re a cycling fan of ANY kind, this race should be on your bucket list to watch live. It is for us!

What Makes It Special?

Nevada City Classic CourseCompared to the typical “Tour” races done by touring the countryside, this one is completed on a 1.1 mile, 7-turn circuit sweeping through the downtown streets of historic Nevada City. Instead of only seeing professional cyclists whiz by as a spectator, you can be right in the action as it happens live in front of you. As they come into the final sprint, the racers will reach speeds of up to 50 mph on the straightaway stampeding into the finish. Widely considered one of the most technically and physically challenging 1-day courses in North America, it won’t disappoint.

Race Almost Cancelled Forever

Just a few months ago, this historic race was on the verge of being cancelled. What happened? At the last minute a major sponsor pulled out, leaving Nevada City on its own to raise funds for the race. Everything from a GoFundMe campaign to generate the last bit of income was thought of. Luckily, the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce approved a reduced budget to make sure the event still happens.

How We Can Help

Image appears courtesy – Nevada City Classic

First and foremost, spread the word! The community needs help bringing those not familiar with the Nevada City Classic on board for support. Second, attend the event in person! We’re HUGE fans of ALL types of cycling from mountain biking to road cycling. There’s just something about seeing the sport in person that’s indescribable. Heck, we make sure to see the Amgen Tour of California when it swings through our region in person each year. Why not support a true grassroots event too!

This isn’t just another race. It’s a cultural and memorable pillar of the area, 60 years strong. With ever-growing event competition whittling away at crowd attendance, it’s harder each year for them to attract sponsors. Let’s help keep the crowds large and continue attracting large sponsors as they market their products and services.
