What Is The Downieville Classic?
A weekend of racing and partying in the Sierras where riders have to pick one tool for two disciplines: a 29-mile cross country race, and a 15-mile downhill with 5000 vertical drop.
The Dirt
Downieville is legendary—and not just for its epic trails. It’s most famous for its races, where riders come to prove they’re as tough and unbreakable as the terrain itself. The Downieville Classic Cross Country race is one of the last true point-to-point mountain bike races left in the U.S. The 29-mile course follows a rugged Gold Rush-era route, climbing from the mountain town of Sierra City (elevation 4,100’) to the crest of the Sierra Nevada (7,100’), before dropping 5,200 vertical feet straight into downtown Downieville.
More than a race, it’s a tribute—to the mountains, the rivers, the towering pines, and the gritty pioneers who carved these trails in search of gold. Then comes the Downieville Downhill—15 miles with a jaw-dropping 5,000 feet of descent from Packer Saddle to town. It’s the longest and most demanding downhill race in the country.
Not racing?
No problem. The weekend’s just as wild off the course—with the legendary Ron’s House of Big Air river jump, a good ol’ log pull competition, and a full soundtrack of live music to keep the stoke high.
