In kayaking circles around North America, the Little White Salmon River is the stuff of legends. A tributary of the mighty Columbia, it’s considered one of the most difficult regular run rivers on the West Coast. It makes sense that the Little White Salmon race, named after this river, is thought to be the Pacific Northwest’s marquee extreme race due to its challenge.

Compared to the rest of these frothy kayak events that are fed by snowmelt, this southern bell is surprisingly held in Fall. Located just outside of Asheville North Carolina on the Green River narrows, more than 2,000 spectators hike into the Gorge. With a 170+ racers battling it out at the end of the North American season, it’s no wonder they call themselves the “Super Bowl of Kayaking.”

When we visited McCall, ID, we heard rumors about the North Fork River. Little did we know this river was home to an extreme kayak race called the North Fork Championship. Halfway between McCall and Boise in a place named Banks, Idaho. With three races and a whitewater kayak film event called the Melt Awards, this is a true breeding ground for serious kayakers. Sadly, as of January 2023 the family who put it on were forced to cancel it. The primary reason? Their insurance company refused to renew their insurance coverage and they couldn’t find a replacement. The sad part is this might be the beginning of end for all major whitewater kayak events moving forward if other class V races are unable to find an alternative liability coverage.

Reno River Festival – Reno, Nevada

No Longer Hosting Whitewater Races

Located smack dab in the center of Reno, since its inception kayaking was the main headliner with over 60 professionals from France, Great Britain, and Austria competing for over $10,000 in prize money. Due to a few reasons from the whitewater park deteriorating to supposedly professionals not calling Reno home sadly the Reno River Festival will no longer host any kayak races. Is this the end for competitive kayaking in northern Nevada?

Out of all the whitewater kayak events, these are our favorites. Is there another event that belongs on this list?

  1. I guess I dont understand how THE GREEN RACE isnt on this list. Other than the North fork and the Little White race it is easily the most sought after prize in North America.

    1. Hey Todd,

Good point! It wasn’t technically next to a ski town so we didn’t include it but like you said it’s one of the biggest races of the year so it’s not a bad idea to include it. Good lookin’ out!
