Ever since we first rolled into @pomerellemountain back in 2017, we find ourselves coming back season after season. And it’s not exactly in our backyard. It’s a solid 9 hr drive… and worth every mile. Ski areas like this are becoming harder to find. You know the type. Those places with people having fun, a relaxed vibe that’s just about the skiing, and uncrossed slopes with powder and perfect corduroy you wish you could ride everyday. That’s why it’s exciting to see the legacy continue, with longtime employees Zack Alexander and his wife Crystal stepping in as the new owners. Yup - Pomerelle has a new family to carry the torch forward. It feels right, like Pomerelle’s soul is in good hands.

Do you know Mt. Bohemia? It’s one of those quintessential Midwest spots that lives the wild life of lake-effect snow, landscapes that are too mind-boggling to seem real and challenging steeps you’d never think you’d find outside of the West. That’s Mt. Bohemia. And to make it even better, all this happens thanks to au naturel Ma’ Nature. No fancy grooming. No snow guns, just what the topography and sky gives you. Want it balmy? Not here. It can get cold but how else would you keep that snow perfect day after day? And it’s not close to a major city… that’s what makes it so worth it. Human nature likes things easy, so if Mt. Bohemia was a 10 minute drive from millions of people, that usually changes the description. It’d be a blowout like so many other easy, convenient places.
Don’t come here to learn. Come when you know how to manage those sticks or board under you. When you get out of your car, the first thing to hit you will be its rawness. No groomers. Just trees, cliffs, and endless freedom to ride whatever, however you want. A true Midwest anomaly. When I visited, my mind went right to its loud, gritty, unapologetic wild feel, like an 80’s punk band that came back to life. And don’t think all there is to do is ski. Get out and explore this part of the Great Lakes region. You got cat skiing @voodoomtn, nature sanctuaries, nordic spas, saunas, and lighthouse photo ops you won’t find on a run-of-the-mill ski vacation. Those #wow moments don’t just have to come from peaks.

There’s nothing more epic than a trip you’ll never forget that no one has ever heard about. Japan sits on many a #powderhounds bucket list but it’s a tough one to make reality. Not exactly next door for most of us here in the US but we all still want to go. So what if you did get the opportunity to travel to the mysterious land of the rising sun? How would you pick where to go? If you Google skiing in Japan, the most popular tourist spots will show up and probably seem the easiest to get to or are even included on your current season pass. But if you only have one shot at it, would you be more adventurous and pick somewhere less known and off the trail from where everyone you know has probably gone? We did… and what a trip it was! A lodge tucked away in northern Japan - the Tōhoku region, next to a tiny ski resort with endless #backcountry opportunities - that you’ve probably never heard of.

The next time you hit the road for that #skitrip to Santa Fe or Taos, we have another stop you should add to the itinerary. Only 40 miles outside of Santa Fe sits a little town, famous for its history but not necessarily somewhere you think of when it comes to skiing. We’re talking about Los Alamos, NM. Yes, that Los Alamos. If you’ve ever heard of the Manhattan Project or watched Oppenheimer, you’ve heard of this town. But did you know they have their own ski resort? They do… and it’s just good down-home fun! Pajarito Mountain is its name and their little bird logo is adorable. If you go online and look at their lift tickets, you’ll find days for $19 and if you’re a high roller and want to ski over Christmas holiday, it will cost you $42. Yes, that’s the highest priced day on the season’s calendar. Most days are $20 or $30 bucks! You’ll have a good time all day, you can eat lunch without setting your wallet on fire and they have one of the best stocked merch shops we’ve seen in a long time. With actual clothes, hats and stickers you want to buy. Oh, and with that ridiculously affordable lift ticket you also get $10 in bird bucks (as they call it) which you can then spend on lunch or in the merch store. There’s not many places left to ski that’s the same price as going to a movie. We had a blast meeting locals and cracking jokes with the lift operators. And don’t forget to leave time for exploring Los Alamos. There are so many museums and historical sights to check out… it’s pretty incredible. And of course, lots of food and coffee to power all your adventuring.

We can’t think of a better place to set your sites on if you want to stuff your face 🌶️ (caution - it could be a bit spicy) and ride some #pow at an elevation sure to get your heart pumping. We’re sure you guessed it - Santa Fe! Maybe skiing doesn’t come to mind when you think of New Mexico, but it should. You’ll have a hard time splitting your days between the cuisine, architecture, art, and culture of the city itself to the snow high up on the peaks. The best trips we’ve taken to Santa Fe didn’t try to combine city time and skiing into the same days. Each deserves your full attention. Build your trip itinerary to allow you full days to explore the city at a relaxing pace and then when it’s time to ski, get up early and hit the road to 10,000’+. And if you happen to be a couple or group that don’t all like playing in the snow, no one will feel left out or sad being left behind in Santa Fe for another day wandering (and eating) through town. We like to think of Santa Fe as a Foodie’s Ski vacation, where anyone can alter the plan and leave off the skiing or the foodie parts, but we don’t recommend lopping off anything foodie related.

What’s one of the worst things that can happen to a #skiresort when they get popular? Nothing. As in they do nothing about it and the whole place gets overrun! Well, that’s not Ski Santa Fe. Santa Fe itself as a city is a great destination with its food, art, culture, and unique look that few places can rival. But add in a ski resort that continues to grow in popularity, and you have a combination that can be dynamite! 🧨 But you want the right kind of snap, crackle, pop. And Ski Santa Fe is one them that pays attention and decided to do something about it. Upgrades as a ski resort are always exciting and especially when they just make the whole experience better. Not a new hot chocolate on the menu. We want to see new lifts! So we’re stoked to hear that Ski Santa Fe added another beginner lift over the summer to combine that with the detachable quad from the summer prior and you’re about to get whipped out and around the base area faster than you ever have! Sweet news for sure. We’ve enjoyed riding at Ski Santa Fe several times and always have a good time. At the eye-popping elevation of over 10,000’ at the base, that sky-high number does wonders for holding onto snow long after storms. Time must move slower up there in the clouds and just lets the snow be as it should be… perfect and ready for you to slash.
