You know it’s been a great El Niño winter when the ski area, just above the glittering lights of the Las Vegas Strip, is extending its season not just until April, but all the way into May! That’s right. They’ve made the announcement to run the lifts one more time for those yearning to squeeze in a few more laps.
In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion
As expected, a ski area in Las Vegas doesn’t normally see the massive snowfalls common in the Northern Sierra, but it does get more than you’d imagine. Lee Canyon receives on average 121 inches of snow each year. While the 2023-24 season started slowly, the latter part of winter and spring picked up serious momentum. In fact, they received an impressive 221 inches!
Another Banner Winter
Similar to Big Bear in Southern California, the El Niño pattern favors the southern regions of the US. And the 2023-24 ski season wasn’t just good for Lee Canyon, it was exceptional. Was it the best ever? That honor belongs to the previous season, as with many parts of the Western United States. Lee Canyon received a whopping 275 inches—the most ever recorded. Curious about the last record-breaking winter before that? You’d have to rewind it to 2003-04, when they saw 234 inches of snow.
Big Winter Means Even Bigger Spring
To celebrate this momentous winter, Lee Canyon announced they’ll host a third spring session next weekend, from Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5. The Bluebird chairlift which accesses their intermediate and advanced terrain will be operating from 10 am to 6 pm.
